The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Regional Office Bhubaneswar was established in September 1984 with the vision of providing effective academic and administrative leadership to Kendriya Vidyalayas under its jurisdiction. At the time of its inception, the Region had a much wider geographical jurisdiction, covering Kendriya Vidyalayas in Odisha, Southern Madhya Pradesh, Southern Bihar and some parts of West Bengal. For a period, Kendriya Vidyalayas in Visakhapatnam were also administered by the Bhubaneswar Region.
In its formative years, the Region focused on establishing strong systems of academic supervision, personnel administration, infrastructure development, student welfare and teacher support. With the expansion of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and the creation of new Regional Offices, the jurisdiction of Bhubaneswar Region evolved and gradually became focused on the state of Odisha.
Over the past four decades, the Region has emerged as an important centre of educational excellence, supporting Kendriya Vidyalayas located across diverse geographical, social and cultural settings of Odisha. Its journey has been marked by a sustained commitment to quality education, academic excellence, innovation, national integration and holistic development of children.
The Region has consistently promoted excellence beyond academics through Science Exhibitions, National Children’s Science Congress, Youth Parliament, Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, Kala Utsav, Scouts & Guides, NCC, sports and cultural activities. These initiatives provide students with opportunities to explore their talents, develop leadership qualities and participate at regional and national levels.
Teacher empowerment and professional development have remained integral to the Region’s educational philosophy. The Zonal Institute of Education & Training (ZIET), Bhubaneswar, has played a significant role in strengthening the professional capacity of teachers and educational leaders through training programmes, workshops and capacity-building initiatives.
The implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 ushered in a new era of educational transformation. The Region has embraced competency-based education, experiential learning, skill development, technology integration, inclusive education, multidisciplinary learning and 21st-century skills, with an increasing focus on making education learner-centred and future-ready.
The PM SHRI initiative has further strengthened this transformation. As of 31 July 2026, 46 Kendriya Vidyalayas under Bhubaneswar Region were designated as PM SHRI KVs, providing an opportunity to develop exemplar schools demonstrating innovative, sustainable, technology-enabled and holistic approaches to education.
The Region has also continued to expand its educational footprint across Odisha. As of 2026, 79 Kendriya Vidyalayas are functioning under the Bhubaneswar Region, with the educational network further strengthened by the opening of three new Kendriya Vidyalayas at Padampur, Redhakhol and Palalahada in 2026. These new institutions represent another significant step towards extending access to quality education to children in emerging and underserved areas.
In 2026, the Region continues to move towards future-ready education, with increasing emphasis on digital learning, Artificial Intelligence, skill education, scientific temperament, sports, sustainability, innovation and holistic development.
From its establishment in 1984 to its present-day role as a dynamic educational region, the journey of KVS Regional Office Bhubaneswar reflects a remarkable transformation—from a regional administrative unit to a vibrant educational ecosystem committed to excellence, inclusion, innovation and national integration.
